Obituary for Spencer Adam Weeks

Spencer Adam Weeks, 83, of Rutherfordton passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2022 in his home. Born June 2nd, 1939 he was the son of Adam Weeks and Laura Jane GoForth Weeks.

Spencer is survived by his wife, Louise Weeks; his two daughters Sherry Suttle and Jenny Yelton (Wesley) both of Rutherfordton; five grandchildren Dylan Suttle (Caroline) of Forest City, Meagan Yelton (Patrick) of Cary, Sarah Yelton (Alex) of Rutherfordton, Laura Weyrich (Scott) of Rutherfordton, and Wyatt Yelton of Rutherfordton; two great grandchildren Shia Manelski of Cary and Ada Weyrich of Rutherfordton; a brother Kenneth Weeks of Valdese; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Gale Weeks Hurt; a brother Johnny Weeks; and a son-in-law Kenneth Ray Suttle.

Spencer was an alumni of Mount Vernon School and it was there that he found his love for playing high school basketball. While on the team he learned lessons from his coach, Ken Griffin that he carried with him throughout his life. Spencer greatly valued education and went on to receive a B.S. degree from Western Carolina University, a Forestry degree from the University of Georgia, and a Masters in Adult Education from Appalachian State University.

Spencer met the love of his life, Louise Thomas of Spruce Pine, while she was a contestant in a local Rutherford County beauty pageant. She came to Rutherfordton to pursue her degree in nursing. Spencer and Louise had a deep love for one another and married immediately after he returned home from serving in the United States Navy.

After returning home, Spencer and Louise settled at the ‘7 Mile Farm, his family’s five generation home in Rutherfordton, where they have lived for over 30 years. Never one to do things by halves, Spencer began his lifelong passion for farming and livestock by raising and showing Arabian Horses, traveling around the country with his family. A man of many talents and interests, Spencer excelled at anything he found interest in. Some of his many loves and interests were: barbering, genealogy, history, cowboys and westerns (John Wayne was his hero), and hosting events (especially hayrides for the local community). His friends and family will remember his love of outdoor cast iron cooking; he loved to make his specialty cobblers to share with others.

There was not an animal in this world that he did not love, especially his herding dogs. He had a deep love for his agriculture community and devoted years to the local 4H organization, American Goat Association, and Cattleman Association. He was a member of Brittain Presbyterian Church, where he met many life-long friends who became his godly family. His daughters and grandchildren will always cherish his many words of wisdom. He always said to put God first, family second, and everything else will fall into place. Among the memories will be his commitment of playing Santa every year for his kids and grandkids.

The funeral will be 2:00 PM on September 15th, 2022 at Brittain Presbyterian Church at 3456 US 64 HWY, Rutherfordton, NC 28139, with Rev. Ted Grant officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 PM.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Carolina Foothills at P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043 or to the Rutherford County Humane Society at PO Box 998, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
